SINGAPORE : New media is increasingly being used to engage residents at the grassroots level.

The Kebun Baru Division in Ang Mo Kio GRC started a blog on Monday ahead of a community visit by Manpower Minister Gan Kim Yong.Community leaders feel that more needs to be done to reach out to youths, and the blog is launched to do this.

It has write-ups on the history of Kebun Baru, and highlights of its significant milestones.

"I think the younger residents these days are a lot more media-savvy.They use the computers a lot, and they are usually so busy they don't have time to come down to the community centres to get to know about what's happening," said Olivia Low, chairman of the Youth Executive Committee, Kebun Baru Division.

But when it comes to a general election, walking the ground is still crucial.

"For the next elections, we will have to depend a lot on traditional channels to reach out to our residents and to get their support. The new media may play a small part. As far as I'm concerned, I will be focusing a lot on the traditional channels," said Ang Mo Kio MP Inderjit Singh.

As part of the ministerial community visit, a new Residents' Committee blog will also go "live" on that day. - CNA /ls
